In the 2022-2023 academic year, government schools in Andhra Pradesh will switch to results-oriented education that brings about positive behavioral changes and turns students into global citizens through the development of social and collaborative skills. ‘Child is not the reason for his or her low performance’ will be the mantra for the teachers and headmasters to achieve the stated goals in accordance with the National Education Policy-2020.
“Teachers and school principals need to be aware of this and take responsibility for student performance. The State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) is charged with upholding academic standards and ensuring that all students achieve learning outcomes commensurate with their class and age,” said Suresh Kumar, Commissioner for School Education .
Targeted implementation of the NEP 2020 by revising and revamping every aspect of education, including regulation and governance, and aligning it with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (quality education) would be the government’s top priority, Suresh Kumar told PTI.
As an important step towards achieving the stated goals, the infrastructure in government schools was completely renovated with new classrooms and digital learning resources, in addition to clean toilets, playgrounds, art sessions, etc. Career guidance for students from grade VIII, involving teachers and parents, would be another groundbreaking initiative to channel talent.
“We are creating a favorable learning environment in all schools as part of the Mana Badi: Nadu-Nedu program. It is now time to ensure adequate learning outcomes for the children through effective classroom transactions,” noted the School Education Commissioner. Suresh Kumar, who has helped improve standards in government-run schools as a district collector in Medak and Guntur, is now trying to take the process to the next level across the state.
He has addressed school principals, as well as principals and education officials at the regional level, about the reform agenda, starting with an innovative and flexible lesson plan for each class and subject. “Any reform in school education can only be successfully implemented at the field level by the teachers as they are the direct facilitators who interact with the children and teach them knowledge,” noted Suresh Kumar.
Accordingly, each teacher has been asked to develop innovative and flexible lesson plans for their subjects in accordance with the students’ standards and best practices. Updated information on each topic separately, current affairs would also be part of the lesson plan.
“Not just academics, the emphasis will also be on co-curricular and extracurricular activities so that teaching and learning become holistic. Remedial learning will be another important aspect addressing individual differences between students to help them build on their knowledge,” said the Commissioner. The SCERT, the academic authority for school education under the RTE Act, will develop an academic monitoring mechanism and provide guidance and support to all field level officials. It will monitor learning outcomes and assess students’ standards, said Suresh Kumar.
