As many as 42 teachers from various schools in Andhra Pradesh have been arrested and suspended so far for committing malpractice during the ongoing annual 10th grade exams. .
The Class X public exams were held for the first time in two years from April 27, as exams were not taken in the previous two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ministry of Education authorities discovered the malpractice on the first day when the Telugu question sheet was photographed and distributed on WhatsApp from Kurnool district, an hour and a half after the investigation started.
The same happened on the second day (Hindi exam) and the third day (English), also in Satya Sai, Kurnool and other districts. In all these cases we immediately discovered the hand of some teachers who, with the help of some outsiders, spread rumors about “leakage” of the questionnaires. This was nothing but gross mischief, as there was no leakage of the questionnaire, but it sought to avoid undue anxiety among students and parents, a senior education ministry official said.
The respective district collectors, along with the police, dealt with the troublemakers and arrested them under the AP Public Examinations (Prevention of Malpractices and Unfair Means) Act, 1997. Although the law was enacted 25 years ago, this was the first time that the teachers were arrested under the anti-malpractice provisions, the official noted.
We have arrested and suspended 42 teachers so far in various districts, the official said. While certain malpractice was common in all public exams, this was the first time strict action had been taken against the erring teachers, the official added.
School Education Commissioner S Suresh Kumar issued a procedure to all district education officials to point out that certain incidents such as unauthorized presence of teachers, who were not required to take exams, in the exam centers; invigilators and other persons with mobile telephones who have been drafted for examination obligation; taking pictures of the question paper and forwarding it to others has come to light. Also, the commitment of students and other outsiders to works such as water supply and attempts to leak the questionnaires by vested interests operating individually/collectively using unfair means were noted, he said.
Teaching is a noble profession and the teachers are expected to be role models in society. Such disgraceful acts by certain teachers not only bring a bad name to the education community, but also to the department and the entire state. This will also negatively affect the morale of students who have studied hard despite all the setbacks, Suresh Kumar noted. hassle-free way.
