An organization of government school teachers in West Bengal on Thursday urged Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee to reconsider the decision to introduce a uniform color scheme for all state schools, arguing that institutes will lose their own identity. It has been decided that in all state schools, students from kindergarten to eighth grade will have a common uniform in blue and white color scheme, and the dress will bear the West Bengal Government’s Biswa Bangla’ logo. Currently, each school has its own color-coded uniform.
Apart from numerous state-sponsored institutions, there are 39 schools run directly by the state government and each of them, with a rich, illustrious heritage spanning 50 to 200 years, has its own identity, said the West Bengal Government School Teachers’ Association in a letter to the Prime Minister. “If the uniform color pattern of students from different schools is clear, it will be easier to distinguish students from one school to another and mark a student for every good job or misdeed. This is important for social discipline and the rule of law,” said the association’s general secretary, Sougata Basu, in the letter. A uniform color code from kindergarten to grade eight will create a mental distance between students of that level and those of grades nine through 12, he said. This will create a division between students from each school, Basu added.
On the government’s recent announcement to deploy self-help groups to sew the uniforms with standardized color schemes, the association said the task could have been given to ‘Tantuja’ to make it financially viable and ensure quality fabrics are used. . The West Bengal State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society, a government agency, sells its products under the ‘Tantuja’ brand. The move to change school uniform sparked a debate as the opposition BJP and CPI(M) accused the ruling TMC of printing the CM’s favorite color pattern and Biswa Bangla logo to “satisfy its whims”.
The prime minister had rejected the claim, saying that the logo that will appear on the new common uniform belongs to the government of West Bengal and not the ruling Trinamool Congress.
