Amid the ongoing protest against the Karnataka government’s decision to release 5,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu through dams in the state, the Farmer Group and Opposition parties today, September 26, called for a bandh across the is located in the city of Bengaluru. So far, the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has provided moral support to the bandh. They said they would make a call to declare a holiday for schools.
Sugarcane Growers Federation president Kuruburu Shanthkumar also called for a bandh and sought support and cooperation from schools, colleges and other private entities to support the statewide bandh and shutdown.
Moreover, Dayananda KA, Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru City District, has declared a public holiday for all schools and colleges in the city. Several private schools and colleges have also declared a public holiday for students.
This protest aims to draw the government’s attention to the grievances of Karnataka and its farmers and express their dissatisfaction over the government’s decision. More than 50,000 people from different walks of life, including traders, workers, students and activists, are expected to participate in the protest.
Adding to the protest against the government’s decision to transfer Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, pro-Kannada organizations also announced another bandh in Karnataka on Friday, September 29, after the ‘Bengaluru Bandh’ held on September 26 took place in September.
According to reports, efforts are being made to ensure that hospitals, nursing homes, medical stores and emergency services continue to function to ensure public safety. Moreover, government buildings and Namma Metro Services will remain operational on Tuesday, September 26, during the state-wide bandh.
However, shops, markets, educational institutions and public transport services including buses and taxis are also likely to cause inconvenience to commuters as they may remain closed.
Additionally, it is to be informed that as of now, there is no official announcement regarding the state-wide bandh. It is advised that students and parents keep in touch with their respective school administrators and teachers for any updates regarding school closures.
