The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) municipality of Mumbai has asked schools in the city to display their names in Marathi in visible places. In a circular issued by the education officer, it instructed all schools under its jurisdiction to place school names in Marathi on large signboards in front of the school. The notice applies to both government and private schools.
The names of the schools must be in Marathi Devanagari script on eight-by-three foot signboards. “The BMC Education Department has issued a circular requesting all schools under its jurisdiction to list the schools names in Marathi Devanagari script on 8×3 foot signboards with out-of-school viability,” said a tweet from news agency ANI.

This comes after the University of Mumbai ordered its affiliated colleges to use Marathi and not just English. Like the schools, the colleges have also been instructed to display their names in bold Marathi letters in visible locations. The prospectus of the admission process should also be available in Marathi, the varsity had instructed.
Earlier, the education minister of Maharashtra School, Varsha Gaikwad, had announced that students studying in class 1 in Marathi medium schools will now receive integrated and bilingual textbooks from the next academic year. The books will contain both English and Marathi words. Gaikwad had said that if it was written in their native language, students would be able to better understand the topics.

“Students understand better what they are taught in their mother tongue. But they also need to understand English words (for Marathi words). We are also committed to reducing the burden of their books. So we’ll introduce Class I integrated plus bilingual books in the state,” Gaikwad had said.
