In the past two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both the central boards – CBSE and CISCE – had changed their exam pattern and result calculation formula. This year, the board exams were held in two terms for the first time. For 2023, the Central Board of Secondary Education said it will go back to a single final exam just like in pre-pandemic times, and so will the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.
In 2022, the pass rate in the CBSE result is recorded as 94.40 percent for grade 10 and 92.71 percent for grade 12. In the CISCE results, the pass rate among grade 12 students was 99.76 percent and among grade 10 students, it was 99.98 percent. CBSE and CISCE had split the board exams into two parts in 2022 and no exams in 2020 and 2021. Both boards see an increase in the success rate, but in the past four years the success rate for CISCE has not fallen below 98 percent, while for CBSE it was around 90 percent.

For the calculation of the results of the CICSE board exam 2022, the board had assigned an equal weight to both semester 1 and semester 2 board exams. Furthermore, it said it will mark as absent students who have completely missed one of the two terms. It was compulsory for students to take both semester 1 and semester 2 exams.
However, while CBSE gave more weight to the results of Term 2 after the results of Term 1 were marred by errors and cheating scandals, it did not explain the controversies. CBSE said, “The main feedback received after the first semester exams was that students were unable to reach their full potential.” The board further added, “feedback for semester 2 exams was more positive, with satisfactory student performance.” In the final result, the exams of term 1 were given 30 percent, while the results of term 2 were weighted 70 percent. Furthermore, the students for the practical exams were given the same weight every semester and the practical of semester 2 was given the same weight.
In 2021, regarding the class 10 exam, CBSE considered the best of three subjects and its average was taken into account in formulating class 12. CBSE had adopted the 30:30:40 formula to inform the students of the CBSE class to evaluate 12 board. According to the Attorney General, 30 percent of the weight is assigned to the final grade of grade 10 and 11 exams, and 40 percent weight is assigned to the pre-board grade 12 exam.
CBSE, CISCE New Exam Pattern
For 2023, there will also be a change in the exam pattern with more internal choices offered by CBSE. This makes the exams more competency-oriented and less frenetic. The board has also revised the syllabus. After nearly two years of holding the 10th and 12th exams in an abbreviated syllabus, CBSE is going back to 100 percent syllabus.
The exams are taken for 80 points and 20 percent of the points for internal assessments or practicals. CBSE will hold class 10 and class 12 exams from Feb. 15. The exam date sheet will be released 45 days to a month before the board exams begin. While CISCE has proposed to hold the said exams in February/March 2023 for the time being.
