Under the Pradhan Mantri Shakti Nirman program, school children are given boiled eggs, bananas or groundnut chikki for 46 days in the current academic year. Therefore, schools in Dakshina Kannada district have started this midday meal program for the past two weeks.
While kids seem happy to be given options for what to eat for lunch at school, teachers have a problem. Children are asked in advance what they would like to eat. They can choose 1 boiled egg – 1 banana or 1 peanut chikki – one of these three options. But kids being kids turned things upside down in just two weeks.
Those who opted for eggs skipped Friday and said they were not eating any non-vegetarian food that day. Some heard from their classmates/friends that Chikki was a nice dessert and started asking for it the next day. Some had egg and later got into banana and chikki counters, and saying no to kids is no easy task, explained teachers from several government schools.
There is another part of this problem: the bills. When a certain number of children choose eggs, that amount of eggs is ordered and purchased from suppliers according to the rulebook. When they later dump eggs and opt for bananas, that falls short. So this whole math has gone mad for the teachers and staff. Students who are inconsistent in their choice is now a big problem, explains Usha M, executive officer, Akshara Dasoha. from
