To undertake sustainable quality interventions to ensure students’ mental health, child protection and career development, Jammu School Education Directorate (DSEJ) Saturday nominated teaching staff with relevant qualification (psychology) and experience as district and zonal counseling coordinators.
Twenty teaching staff with relevant qualifications have been nominated as district counseling coordinators and district counselors, while 98 staff members have been nominated as zonal counseling coordinators to coordinate counseling activities in the field in addition to their daily school duties, an official said.
He said they would implement the guidelines of Manodarpan’, an initiative of the Union Ministry of Education to ensure the mental health of the students. They would also oversee the implementation of the counseling activities calendar issued by DSEJ that covers various topics such as psychological first aid, mental health, substance abuse, child protection, career counseling, psychosocial issues, the official added.
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the psychosocial and mental health needs of individuals, especially school students, he said, adding that the new education policy also emphasizes the guidance and counseling of school students. School Education Director Jammu Ravi Shankar Sharma hoped for better treatment of stakeholders’ mental health issues by these counselors and said further training will also be given to them to improve their counseling skills.
