New Delhi, June 9: University of Delhi has written to colleges requesting to ensure there is no caste-based discrimination on campus, saying officials or faculty should refrain from such acts against SC/ST students on the basis of their social origin. Writing to colleges on May 25, the assistant registrar of the varsity added several letters from the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the prevention of caste discrimination in higher education and requested them to take the necessary action on the matter.
The UGC has requested four actions in this direction, including the establishment of a committee to investigate discrimination complaints from SC/ST/OBC students, teachers and non-teaching staff. “The university/institute/college may develop a page on their website for filing such complaints of caste discrimination by Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) students and also post a complaint register in the registrar/headquarters for this purpose. “If such an incident comes to the attention of the authorities, immediate action should be taken against the erring official/faculty members,” it further suggested.
