After clearing grade 12, trade flow students often get confused between BCom, BBA, and BCA as their degree options. Which of these is better and which bachelor’s degree will serve you best?
BCom (Bachelor of Commerce) is a traditional degree while BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and BCA (Bachelor in Computer Application) are professional degree programs.
BBA degree focuses on theoretical subjects such as finance, marketing and human resources, BCom is more focused on the core principles of Accounts, Economics and Business. At the same time, BCA is a technical concept-based study that consists of topics such as C++, JAVA and computer fundamentals.

BBA is considered to be the simplest of these three courses as it is based on theoretical ideas that can be easily understood by anyone. At the same time, BCom and BCA are taking a more technical approach. While BCA is an easy choice for science students and BCom is a viable alternative for a commerce student, BBA suits both streams.
BCA course is a great option for students who are interested in technical aspects and computers, but don’t want to get an engineering degree, academics believe. However, only those students can proceed with a BCA degree who have studied Mathematics in grade 11 and grade 12. There is no requirement for B.com and BBA degrees.
“The syllabus of all these three courses is very different from each other, therefore one should take a course considering their future goals and their strengths and weaknesses. We can’t say that one grade is better than the other,” says counselor Swati Salunkhe.
Switching between BCA and B.com courses is difficult if you have no prior knowledge, as BCA and BCom are more stream-oriented. On the other hand, a BBA imparts fundamental knowledge of management without requiring a student to have any prior experience.
dr. Santosh Yadav, a professor of the Ministry of Commerce, Sarojini Naidu Govt. Girls PG College, Bhopal says that with BBA and BCA courses, it becomes important that students also pursue masters degree in the same program. “If one pursues BBA or BCA, the future options for a master’s degree become very limited, while if one pursues BCom, students have the opportunity to become everything from chartered accountant to lawyer. Given the confusion and uncertainties students typically face during their undergraduate degree, BCom is a safer option and opens a lot of doors,” he adds.
BCom can also help students prepare for competitive exams at the national level, especially when it comes to eligibility for bank exams.
BBA offers various specializations such as Finance, Human Resources, Banking and Insurance, Marketing, Foreign Trade, Hospitality, Hotel Management, Information Technology, Communication and Media, Hospital and Care Management, etc.
“Whatever the student pursues, hard work is ultimately important. Nowadays everyone has a bachelor’s degree and to stand out in the industry one has to prove one’s skills. In order for that to follow, people have to continue with the course of their interest,” says Accountancy professor Jitendra Jat.
Different positions for those with a BBA degree include Finance Manager, Tax Assistant, Credit and Risk Manager, Insurance Manager, Marketing Manager, Sales Manager, Research Associate, Strategy and Operations Manager
Entrepreneurship, Teacher/Teacher, etc.
Job prospects for those with BCA degree include software developer, technical analyst, systems administrator programmer, technical support, web developer, etc. At the same time, people with B.com can get jobs as accountants, tax assistants, chartered accountants, actuaries, bank PO, financial analysts, etc.
