The University of Delhi has informed its 32 colleges that they are free to appoint teachers even if they do not have a “regular principal”, a reversal of its earlier mission of not making new appointments without a permanent head teacher. In a notice dated Aug. 31, DU said it had “revised” its previous guideline “in the greater interest of students.”
The university’s assistant registrar had said in a letter dated May 18 to the university’s governing bodies that the appointment of teaching and non-teaching positions should not be allowed, whether on a contract, ad hoc or even regular basis until they are approved. have a permanent director. Seven teachers from DU’s Academics for Action and Development had subsequently written a letter to Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, urging him to “review” the suspension.

The teachers, including members of the academic council and executive council, had said that several colleges were already understaffed and that the guideline would negatively affect the quality of the teaching-learning process. They had argued that the delay in the permanent appointments of directors for strange reasons should not harm education.
In the new notice issued a few days ago, DU said: “It has now been decided that the college(s)/institution(s), wherever the acting/functioning director(s) are located, may continue to advertise of the only teaching in different disciplines for the greater benefit of the students.”
