Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dharmendra Pradhan launched a textbook on ‘Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems: Concepts and Applications. This book attempts to fill the gap for the provision of a compulsory course on the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), recently mandated by AICTE. The textbook curriculum was developed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore in collaboration with VYASA Yoga Institute, Bengaluru, and Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Ernakulam. It is written by Prof. B Mahadevan, IIM Bangalore and co-author of Associate Prof. Vinayak Rajat Bhat, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, and Nagendra Pavana RN, with the School of Vedic Knowledge Systems at Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Ernakulam.
Although the book was developed primarily for use by technical institutions, its structure and content lend itself readily to meet the requirements of other university systems, including liberal arts, medicine, science, and management.

At the event, Pradhan expressed his happiness that the authors in this book have provided an academic framework for the Indian knowledge system. Speaking of Vedas, Upanishads and other Indian texts, he said that our ancient heritage is full of treasures that need to be preserved, documented and disseminated. He also spoke about several examples of science-based practices and knowledge from ancient India that we can still find relevant in the modern world.
The minister said India’s education system is being decolonized under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “As we adopt the good things from our distant past, we must also consider the problems in our society and build a future that creates synergy between past knowledge and contemporary issues. Solutions to many of the world’s problems lie in the Indian knowledge system,” he added.
In addition, the New Education Policy (NEP) has also mapped out a clear trajectory for instilling IKS in the higher education curriculum, which will make such a book necessary in several higher education institutions in the country in the coming days.
The newly released IKS textbook will enable the students to bridge the gap between traditional and modern education system by providing students with the opportunity to reconnect with the past, build a holistic scientific character and use it for multidisciplinary research and innovation, an official statement from the ministry said.
Established in October 2020, Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is an innovative cell under the Ministry of Education (MoE) of AICTE, New Delhi.
