Many people dream of becoming an IAS/IPS officer, but only a few can make that dream come true. Every year, the exam is conducted annually in three stages to choose officers from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and the Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.
Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in the starters and main courses followed by the interview phase. Because it is one of the most difficult exams to crack, aspirants often take years to prepare for it. From Anudeep Durishetty to Shruti Sharma, let’s take a look back at the top performers from the past 5 years:
UPSC CSE 2021 topper: Shruti Sharma
Shruti Sharma, from Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor, topped the exam, scoring a total of 1105 points. Of the total, she got 932 points on the written paper and 173 points in the interview. She is a graduate of St Stephens College of Delhi University with History (Hons). She qualified UPSC with history as her elective.

UPSC CSE 2020 topper: Shubham Kumar
Shubham Kumar was the first on the merit list in 2020. He achieved a total of 1054 points, including 176 in the personality test or the interview. Born in Katihari, Bihar, he is an alumnus of IIT-Bombay where he studied BTech of Civil Engineering. This was his second attempt. He had previously appeared for Civil Services in 2019 and achieved 290 rank.
UPSC CSE 2019 topper: Pradeep Singh
The total number of points Pradeep Singh scored was 1072, of which he got 914 points in the paper itself. In the interview round he managed to get 158 points. Pradeep, a resident of the Sonipat district, was already undergoing probation at the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) when the results were announced. He passed the exam in his UPSC CSE exam on his fourth attempt and is currently posted in the IAS at his home cadre Haryana.
UPSC CSE 2018 topper: Kanishak Kataria
With 942 points in the written exam and 179 in the interview, Kanishak Kataria was able to score a total of 1121 points. Coming from a family of civil servants, Kanishak previously worked as a software engineer at Samsung, but left his high-paying job to take the civil service exam. He is currently posted as SDO in Mount Abu in Rajasthan.
UPSC CSE 2017 topper: Anudeep Durishhetty
Anudeep Durishhetty had scored 950 points on the written paper and 176 on the personality test in UPSC CSE 2017. Of all the above toppers, Anudeep’s total number is still the highest with 1126. Hyderabad based Anudeep took the ringside in UPSC CSE in his fourth attempt. he already served as an official of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). He is currently posted as District Collector, Bhadradri Kothagudem in Telangana.
