The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) celebrated Republic Day 2022 by congratulating many of its essential service personnel. The Institute awarded campus development and excellence awards to several non-teaching personnel, including the ambulance driver, security supervisor, hostel administrator, domestic worker, office clerk, student volunteer, counselor and bank staff “for providing unwavering services” during the pandemic.
The Institute also presented faculty excellence awards to four faculty members for excellence in teaching, research, institution building and outreach activities. Qualified students with outstanding academic performance in Semester I of 2021-22 were also congratulated through an online ceremony.

Takhatsinh Solanki, an ambulance driver at IITGN who has been honored with the campus development award, said: “I did everything I could only with the spirit of service to the Covid patients and help them get to the right medical facility as soon as possible. I feel I am privileged to have had this opportunity to serve the community in times of need. Today I feel humbled and honored to receive this award from IITGN.”
Prof Umashankar Singh, Associate Professor (Biological Engineering), was awarded the Faculty of Excellence award for outreach activities. He has been commended for developing and managing the on-campus COVID-19 RT-PCR testing facility to assist the government of Gujrat in delivering timely results.
“The pandemic necessitated the adoption of real-time RT-PCR, a staple for us molecular biologists in basic science, in public health. I am grateful that my institution has entrusted me with this responsibility. The efforts of our student volunteers were critical to our success. It has been an honor to serve the public good while leading a team of exemplary dedicated volunteers,” said Singh.
