Government schools evaluated in a state-wide exercise in Assam have shown improvement this year compared to 2022, with the number of schools in the top A+ grade increasing and the number of schools in the lowest grade decreasing, a report said.
The number of students placed in the top-performing categories also increased in 2023 from the previous year, it said.
The result of ‘Gunotsav 2023’, which covers 44,531 schools and 41,35,163 (96.69 percent) students across all 31 districts, was released here on Monday by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Children from grades 1 to 9 of government/provincial, tea garden management schools, tea garden model schools, Adarsh Vidyalaya, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and residential schools were involved in the exercise.
The percentage of schools with an A+ grade was 28.64 percent this year against 11.56 percent in 2022.
The schools in category A also rose to 46.19 percent in 2023 against 40.69 percent last year.
In contrast, the percentage of schools in categories B, C and D has decreased this year to 18.58, 4.75 and 1.85, respectively, compared to 31.54, 11.13 and 5.08, respectively, in 2022.
Schools with a percentage of 86.50 and above are classified in category A+, between 73.50 and 86.49 percent in A, 60.50 to 73.49 percent in B, between 48.50 and 60.49 percent in C and 0-48.49 percent in Category D.
The percentage of students placed in A+ and A categories increased to 38.16 and 32.51 percent in 2023, up from 23.79 and 25.64 percent respectively in the previous year.
The percentage of pupils in categories B, C and D has fallen this year to 16.57, 6.37 and 6.39 percent compared to 21.20, 12.58 and 16.78 percent in 2022.
Among the districts, Sivasagar, Charaideo and Golaghat performed best, while West Karbi Anlong, Chirang and Karbi Anglong were at the bottom of the ranking.
This year’s ‘Gunotsav’ was conducted in three phases from January 18 to February 18, focusing on four core areas: scholasticism (children’s learning outcomes), co-scholasticity, infrastructure and community participation.
The government claims that the initiative has a “major impact on the school education scenario in the state”, and has already issued a notice for the inclusion of the evaluation process in the academic calendar.
‘Gunotsav’ was first organized in 2017 and this was the fourth edition of the exercise.
