Police have detained eight people, including three examiners, in Gujarat’s Mehsana district for allegedly sharing and copying the answers from the state forestry’s recruitment exam, an official said Monday. The survey was conducted by the University of Gujarat on behalf of the Ministry of State Forestry between 12 noon and 2 pm on Sunday.
Mehsana Chief Inspector of Police Parthrajsinh Gohil said it was not a “paper leak” case and that the incident was limited to only one examination center here. An employee of the exam center at a school in the village of Unava clicked on a photo of an absent candidate’s questionnaire here shortly after the exam started, he said. Some of the accused huddled to answer the questions in a room in the same center while the exam was in progress. They would then have shared the answers with three candidates, as pre-planned, the official said.
“They were able to solve 44 of the 100 questions and then shared the answers with three candidates. They also shared the answers with a fourth candidate to silence him, as he had seen them share the answers with other exam candidates during a toilet break,” he said. Later, another exam candidate found out that this fourth candidate was cheating with the answer key and informed the exam supervisor, who then alerted the police, he said.
“This is not a case of demand paper leaking in advance or being sold for a price. The mischief was done by a teacher at the exam center after the test started,” he said. Police have registered an FIR against eight people, including the school staff and candidates who tried to take advantage of it, under Sections 120 of the Indian Code. of criminal law (B) (criminal conspiracy), 406 and 409 (dealing with criminal breach of trust) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), and provisions of the Information Technology Act.
“All eight accused have been detained,” Gohil said. On Sunday, the opposition congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat accused the state BJP government of failing to ensure a fair conduct of the investigation.
The state’s education minister, Jitu Vaghani, had said on Sunday that according to the primary information he had received, it was a case of copying at the exam center in Unava village in Mehsana.
