The Calcutta Supreme Court on Thursday ordered police to file a report into the investigation into the death of a third-year student from IIT-Kharagpur, whose body was found in his hostel room.
Judge Rajasekhar Mantha ordered the police to submit the case file at the next hearing date.
The court heard a petition filed by Faizan Ahmed’s father, who is from Assam, seeking a special investigation team (SIT) into the death.
The court ordered the Inspector of Police (SP) of Paschim Medinipur to file a report on the investigation being conducted in this case, and also asked him to appoint a senior officer to oversee the investigation into the death of Ahmed.
The court ordered an evisceration of the deceased’s preserved body samples.
The investigating officer of the case was ordered to attend the court’s next hearing on November 10.
Ahmed’s body was found in his hostel room on October 14.
Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, wrote to his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee on October 20, requesting intervention to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the student, who came from the Tinsukia district in the northeastern state.
