Now the government and private schools start at 7am and finish by noon.
Amid the heat wave, the government of Haryana has changed the timing of government and private schools from May 4. Now the schools start from 7am and end by noon. This came after some of the primary teachers of government schools demanded a change over time. A group of teachers had written a letter to the chief minister of Haryana and the minister of education urging them to cut the time they spent at school by two hours and change the times.
Haryana, like many other states in Northern India, is undergoing a heat wave. Gurugram was the hottest place in Haryana at 45.9 degrees Celsius. Warm weather conditions also prevailed in Hisar and Bhiwani, with both cities recording maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and 44.8 degrees Celsius respectively, according to the weather report from the Meteorological Department. In Haryana, among others, Narnaul registered a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius, while Rohtak clattered at 44.1 degrees Celsius. Ambala registered a maximum of 42.4 degrees Celsius. Karnal recorded a maximum of 42.7 degrees Celsius.
After recording the hottest summers, several states have changed their school hours. Many have also announced early summer vacations. The neighboring state of Punjab has not only changed school hours, but has also declared summer holidays in all schools from May 14 due to the severe heat wave scorching the state.
The government of the Union has also issued an opinion after registering climate change. The union government has asked people to limit their sun exposure, especially between noon and 3 p.m. This is usually the time when school children have a break and go home. So to keep kids from getting into the scorching heat, schools are making up for it.
This comes in a year when schools had finally reopened after two years of online classes due to the pandemic. The new sessions started in March-April. These were the first on-campus sessions after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March in 2020.
