Bachelor of Arts (BA) courses had the highest enrollment in the country with 1.04 crore students, followed by Bachelor of Science (BSc) courses with 49.12 lakh students, according to the All India Survey for Higher Education ( AISHE) 2020-21 from the government.

”Bachelor of Science (BSc) has enrolled 49.12 lakh students (52.2 percent of them are girls). There are 43.22 lakh students enrolled in BCom (out of them 48.5 percent are girls). BTech has 23.20 lakh enrolled students of which 28.7 percent are female. Bachelor of Engineering (BE) has enrolled 13.42 lakh students, of which 28.5 percent are female,” the report said.

At the postgraduate level, the maximum number of students enrolled is in social sciences (9.41 lakh students, 56.5 percent of whom were girls), followed by science.
The total number of PG students in social sciences is 9,41,648, of which 56.5 percent are female students. The total enrollment in the Science stream has 6,79,178, of which 61.3 percent are female. Management stream has 6,86,001 students enrolled in PG with 43.1 percent girls.
The commerce stream has 5.36 lakh students enrolled in PG with 66.5 percent female students. There are 3.20 lakh students enrolled in PG in Indian languages which is divided into 12 sub streams. The number of students enrolled in the education stream is 2.06 lakh, of which the major contributor is female at 64.4 percent,” it said.
At the PhD level, the maximum number of students enrolled is in the Engineering and Technology stream, followed closely by Science. The Engineering and Technology stream is divided into 21 sub-streams with a total of 56,625 students enrolled in PhD, of whom 33.3 percent are female.
Science stream has 48,600 students enrolled in PhD with 48.8 percent female. It is divided into 17 substreams such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and zoology.
STEM comprises the Science stream (including Mathematics) and the Engineering & Technology stream. Enrollment in STEM (at UG, PG, MPhil and PhD levels) is 94.69 lakh, of which 53.74 lakh (56.8 pc) are male and 40.94 lakh (43.2 pc are men). ) women.
The Ministry of Education has been conducting the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2011, which covers all higher education institutions in the country and provides higher education.
The survey collects detailed information on various parameters such as student enrollment, teacher data, infrastructure information, financial information, etc.
For the first time in AISHE 2020-21, Higher Education Institutions, or HEIs, have completed data online through the Web Data Capture Format (DCF), developed by the Department of Higher Education with the assistance of the National Informatics Center (NIC) .
