The UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) is taken by thousands of people across the country every year, but only a small fraction of them pass the exam and go a step further. The UPSC exam is not only demanding in terms of the size of the syllabus, but it is also daunting due to its highly uncertain nature. The exam consists of three phases: preliminary examination (objective), main examination (written) and interview (personality test).

It is important to note that the UPSC CSE cannot be passed by simply being a bookworm. The final stage in the procedure is the personality test round, in which the UPSC board interviews the candidate to evaluate his/her personality. This requires an overall development of the individual, irrespective of academic ability. Since most freshmen are confused about how to start their preparation mission, here are some UPSC study suggestions that can help you prepare for the exam:

Be determined: Before trying to understand how to prepare for UPSC at home, educate yourself about the quest. Set goals and spend time effectively. In addition, prepare yourself mentally and physically

Thorough knowledge of the syllabus: Students should formulate a brief and accurate knowledge of the nature and scope of the UPSC exam syllabus. Such an understanding is extremely crucial for proper preparation, as it helps to understand what you should and should not read. In particular, the exam does not require too extensive or in-depth knowledge, it requires people who know a little about everything and are not professionals. Since questions are asked from the syllabus, candidates should keep a close eye on the syllabus and handle the selected syllabus smartly. Issues from previous years reveal the anatomy of the exam.

Create a preparation strategy: A good technique is a solid plan that gives the preparation a clear direction and makes clear what needs to be done and how to achieve this with scarce resources. Aspirants should follow a smart strategy with details of each step. In addition, students have to think about the strategy of toppers and acquire certain elements, such as their study pattern.

Follow smart study patterns: A good study pattern also helps determine question types, observe the most relevant source of study materials, and master time management skills.

Select study material: The NCERT books from grades 6 to 12 play a very substantial role in preparing for the UPSC exam. Aspirants can extract crucial concepts and hypotheses from NCERT books. These books present the information very accurately. Moreover, they are also credible because the source is the government itself. In previous years, UPSC has asked questions straight from NCERT books.

Principles of cracking the prelims: UPSC Prelims is certainly the first target, but it is inseparable from the main exam in the first place as the syllabus is mostly common. Students must prepare for the multiple choice exam (MCQs), for Prelims.

Read newspapers and keep up to date with current affairs: The papers are the most crucial aspect of the exam. If you don’t browse the daily newspaper or follow the daily news for the exam, you can’t hope to pass this exam. The subjects that are asked in the official examination relate directly or indirectly to current events.

Review: Revision is very crucial when you come across an exam as tough as the UPSC. Since the syllabus is vast and diverse, it is normal to overlook things you had studied before. To avoid this, overhaul is a must.

UPSC interview: This is an important stage in the process, where you will be assessed on qualities such as diplomatic skills, communication skills, presence of mind, response to stress, etc. You will also be asked questions about your hobbies, interests, education and work experience.

Stay positive: The most valuable aspect of the whole UPSC quest is to stay positive. There are times when it can get pretty hard and you will feel depressed. Get pessimistic thoughts out of your head and work on them.
