The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Service Examination (CSE) is one of the toughest competitive exams in the country. Thousands of candidates spend years preparing and then appear for the exam to get an administrative job in the Indian government. But only a few of them pass the exam. Since the CSE syllabus is quite extensive and varied, preparation takes a lot of time. It is usually believed that people who are good in their academics from the start can perform better in the CSE. Let’s look at the success story of one such candidate, Shreyans Kumat, who left his high-paying job to pursue UPSC and cleared it in his first attempt.
Shreyans Kumat was born in Kishangarh, in Ajmer, Rajasthan. His grandfather was always enthusiastic and wanted him to become an IAS officer, but he wanted to be an engineer. After completing his schooling up to 10th grade, he took science in 11th grade and went to Kota to prepare for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for two years.
After 12th grade, he completed his JEE degree and went on to do B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. After completing his engineering studies, he got a job at the popular consultancy firm Ernst & Young (EY). He worked there for about two years and while working there he realized that he wanted to do something not only for his family but also for the community.
When he realized this, he decided to quit his job and prepare for UPSC CSE. He even joined offline classes to prepare for the exam. Shreyans believed that both online studies and offline coaching helped him. He once said that offline coaching helped him understand the core concepts and the internet helped him revise. According to reports, he thoroughly researched the exam pattern and studied for about 10 hours a day. He then pursued the CSE and got an AIR 4 in his first attempt at the UPSC CSE.
