The Assam government along with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have decided to open a mining department at the institute. The initiative is expected to help educate young students. It also aims to engage experienced professionals in developing ways and resources in the form of research and technical guidance to utilize the abundant natural resources scattered across the state of Assam and the Northeast.
“The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and officials from various departments of the government of Assam held a comprehensive meeting today to prepare the future course and cooperate in various areas related to the development of the region” the institute said.
IIT Guwahati’s involvement in organizing the International Road Safety Conclave will also be taken up immediately and efforts to improve road safety across the region will be intensified together with the Ministry of Transport, Government of Assam.
IIT Guwahati will boost research into the use of tea compounds in various sectors such as medicine, health and wellness. Efforts will be made in conjunction with the state officials to highlight the importance of various teas and their rich ingredients.
The Government of Assam has requested the cooperation and support of IIT Guwahati in the proposed plan to establish Assam Skill University. Under the remit of the technical department, a research and development facility is proposed that will be accommodated in several respects to provide inland waterway transport (ship engine design, ship design and the repair and maintenance hub).
“According to the request of the state government, IIT Guwahati will be very glad to contribute, mainly in the fields focusing on the exploration of mines and minerals, the development of trade and entrepreneurship, the involvement of drones in various sectors, the transportation sector – Inland water transport, water buses , road safety, aspects related to skills development in multiple emerging sectors and the establishment of several centers of excellence and state-of-the-art laboratories at the institute,” said Prof. TG Sitharam, director of IIT Guwahati.
