A student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room Friday night, police said. The student was from Kerala and took a B.Tech course here.
A police officer from Amingaon Police Station said the body had been found hanging in the hostel’s room and was being sent for an autopsy. The reason why the student took the extreme step is still unknown.
A statement from IIT-G reads: “It is with great sadness that IIT, Guwahati announces the untimely death of a senior Design Department student on campus on September 16, 2022.”
The parents were informed by the institute and made their way to Guwahati. “We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family at this time of mourning. The Institute extends its sincere condolences to the student’s family and friends,” the IIT-G said in a statement.
Although the institute has not revealed the identity of the student, according to police sources, the deceased was identified as Surya Narayan Premkishore. There have been several suicide cases at IIT Guwahati in recent years.
