With the improvement of the overall COVID-19 situation, the authorities of IIT Kharagpur are planning to start offline classes, but the dates for that will not be decided until after all students are back on campus, Registrar Tamal Nath said on Friday. About 7,000 students, about half of their total number, are already in the hostels and the labs are open.
“Offline lessons cannot start again until all students are present. We have informed about 15,000 students and their parents,” he said. No timetable has been set yet to start offline classes and it will depend on the arrival of all students.
At present, the institute is providing online classes that have continued since mid-March 2020 following the suspension of classroom teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Registrar said.
IIT Kharagpur had previously planned to start operations on campus from January after the convocation was held in hybrid mode in December 2021, but due to the sudden spike in cases, that plan was shelved. The situation has now significantly improved.
