The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is introducing new MA programs, offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Institute claims to expand the scope of the MA program by adding Economics to the already existing Development Studies and English Studies streams and offering all three streams as two-year programs instead of the current five-year integrated MA programmes. These programs will be offered from the 2023 academic session.

There are 25 seats for Indian students under each stream. These programs are also open to international students on a redundant basis. The application procedure will start in March/April 2023 and classes will start in July 2023. Instead of HSEE, admission to the two-year MA courses will take place on the basis of an entrance exam to be announced shortly.
IIT Madras claims it hopes to attract a more diverse set of applicants by making the MA programs available after graduation from various streams.
Prof. dr. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said: “The restructuring of the MA program has been done with the aim of making the same accessible to more students who have completed their undergraduate degrees in multiple disciplines, spanning humanities, science, commerce, engineering etc. Such type of exposure to humanities and social sciences is much needed for the next generations of students to face and tackle various challenges of the modern world. This comprehensive list of MA programs will open new avenues for placement and employability as the students will be trained to become domain-specific experts with international readiness and national focus.”
The course curriculum of the MA programs will be restructured to include more contemporary subjects such as economics of innovation, urban planning and development, health policy, environmental humanities, climate economics, technology and policy, and computational linguistics.
