In order to offer students from Ladakh better opportunities, the UT board has collaborated with the IITs in Delhi, Bombay and Kanpur. Through this partnership, students will have the opportunity to offer both internships and an MTech degree, which is sponsored by the UT administrations.
This opportunity is for students from Ladakh who are currently pursuing an undergraduate level course in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
Students selected for the short-term and long-term internships would be awarded consolidated scholarships of Rs 15000 and Rs 50,000 respectively. The students selected for the M. Tech programs would be awarded a scholarship of Rs 25,000 per month
Students have the option to choose short term internships of 1.5 to 2 months, long term internships for six months, two year MTech program. There are a total of 30 places available at the three IITs for short term internship, 15 places for long term internship and 12 places for M Tech programs.
Students for a short internship would be selected on the basis of their application, but for the long-term internship and MTech, the selection would be on the basis of both an application and an online interview.
The Union Territory Board of Ladakh intends to establish a College of Engineers in the Union Territory.
Prof Shantanu Roy, Dean Academics, IIT Delhi and Program Coordinator, said: “Colleagues from all three IITs have come together for this effort to increase the level of interest and opportunity of students from Ladakh in STEM subjects. We hope that this joint effort of the IITs will contribute to increasing the skilled manpower in the UT in STEM subjects”.
