A secondary school located in Saini Darwan, a remote area of Budgam has a building arrangement but is operated from a poultry farm. Everyday children are on a farm to get an education. There is no playground and no toilet on the farm that has been converted into a school.
However, although a building was built for the school, the owner of the land has occupied it and the administration would not take any action.
When News18.com spoke to the students here, they shared their problems. One student said: “There is only one toilet, which makes it difficult for them. There should be a separate toilet for female students, there isn’t one.” The student added that “when it rains, the lights go out and bad light affects their school time because they can’t see anything”.
It appears that the government has also recently built a new building for the school, but it has been closed due to negligence. Owner of the land on which the building stands has taken possession of the building and kept his belongings there and the students worry about whether they will ever get a proper school again.
On the other hand, the parents say that they want their children to get a good education and to prosper in the future, but if the school is in this state, what will be the future of the children?
They appealed to the administration to pay attention to them. The father of one of the students said: “Looking at the current situation, we just want the kids to study something. If the school is not good, our children will not become doctors or engineers. If there were facilities, the children would have studied with much more enthusiasm and could progress as well.”
Construction on a new building for the school began in 2010. The government had made promises to the landowners and when those promises were not fulfilled, the owners seized the building. The owners say they are treated unfairly and the management is quite careless.
Speaking to News18.com, landowners said, “We are not against education, we want the school to be good, but the promises made to us before must be kept.”
When News18 contacted Chief Education Officer Budgam by phone, he said the R&B department is working on it and the issue will be resolved very soon.
