Citing the examples of the Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical uncertainties, noted Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) economist and president Bibek Debroy asked the graduating students to be prepared for uncertainties when they leave the institute. At ISI’s 56th meeting, he said economists are able to distinguish between risks and uncertainties. With uncertainties, opportunities are unknown, with risk there are opportunities, says Debroy, who is also chairman of the economic advisory board to the prime minister.
“As India and the world overcame an exogenous shock from Covid, we were faced with a new geopolitical uncertainty. If you step out, the world is more uncertain. So I’ll say you want what you get and not get what you want. Because you don’t get what you want, Debroy told the students. he apparently meant the crisis in Ukraine. In his virtual speech, Debroy said he expects the students to overcome the challenges and make India proud. dr. Gagandeep Kang of Christian Medical College also spoke during the program.
