Essay contest on prophet mohammad in karnatak school, government orders probe
A group of men who identified themselves as right-wing activists stormed into a government school in Karnataka and sued the school principal for holding an essay contest at the school.
The director of the government secondary school in the village of Nagavi in Karnataka, Abdu Muafar Bijapur, had organized an essay writing competition in which students had to write an essay on the prophet Muhammad. The winner of the competition would be awarded Rs 5000 as a reward.
The subject of the essay did not go down well with some of the parents who claimed it was the principal’s way of religiously converting the children.
One of the excited parents approached the right-wing activist group Sri Ram Sene. The parents said they wanted to know the intent of the competition and accused the school principal of “imposing Islam” on children.
When they received the complaint, the group of activists stormed into the school and hacked into the headmaster in front of a hundred students.
The matter has been raised with the Ministry of Education. The education department has ordered an investigation into the incident
Block Education Officer Virupakshappa Naduvinamani told news agency ANI: “I will get the complaint copy from Sri Ram Sene. I will also be informed by the principal of the school and students and provide it to the deputy principal.”
Earlier this year, schools and colleges in Karnataka faced massive protests with students demanding to wear hijab (headscarves) on campuses, while authorities claimed it was not part of the uniform. The Supreme Court upheld the state government’s ban on the hijab, saying that wearing the hijab by Muslim women is not mandatory in Islam and that the state government has the power to enforce uniforms in educational institutions.
