Several hundred people in Latur, Maharashtra paid tribute to melody queen Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday at a university here named after her father, for which the legend had staged a special charity show more than 40 years ago to raise money for the establishment of the educational institution. Lata Mangeshkar was the driving force behind the efforts that culminated in the establishment of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar College at Aurad Shahajani in Nilanga Tehsil, located on the Karnataka border.
Several villagers said they always felt a special bond with the late legend, who had visited for the hospital’s inauguration on December 4, 1976. She organized the ‘Sangeet Rajni’ event on Feb. 28, 1981 to raise money as promised to the Sharadopasak Shikshan Sanstha, villagers said. “Her help in the field of education in Latur is invaluable,” said Vishwanathrao Valade, the president of the Sharadopasak Shikshan Sanstha.
