Fourteen female students from a polytechnic in Maharashtra’s Solapur district have fallen ill from suspected food poisoning, police said on Wednesday. These students come from a hostel at Siddheshwar Women’s Polytechnic in the city of Solapur, about 240 km away. The affected students were hospitalized and given medical treatment. They started vomiting on Tuesday after eating in the mess of the hostel, police said.

“We asked the other inmates at the hostel, who complained that substandard food was served in the dining room, which could have led to food poisoning,” said an official from Jodbhavi Police Station. The students’ statements have been recorded and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has collected samples of the food items from the mess, he said, adding that the health of the 14 students is stable.
