Saumitra Garg is the only candidate from Uttar Pradesh who has achieved 100 percentile in Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main. Despite being one of 14 students from across the country to achieve this score, Garg still thinks his goal hasn’t been reached yet. He is now pursuing the IIT Entrance Exam – JEE Advanced. The 19-year-old has already passed the KVPY, the entrance exam for IISc Bangalore.
The teen calls the JEE Main an easy exam. He said he managed to get the 100 percentile score at the technical entrance without much preparation. “I didn’t focus on JEE Main. I have been preparing for the IIT Entrance Exam – JEE Advanced for the past two years. There are only a few chapters that differ in JEE Main and Advanced. Since Advance is a more difficult exam, clearing drafts for it helped automatically prepare me for Main. I haven’t focused much on it because my main goal has always been to get a place in an IIT,” he said.

Even though there is still one attempt left for JEE Main, the Meerut boy will not seize the opportunity to improve his score and will continue his rigor for IIT. Although he has yet to decide which IIT to study at, he is clear about his choice of subject: computer science. He said he likes physics and math and that BTech CS can offer the best of both.
For his IIT education, he has been studying at FIITJEE Meerut for two years now. With about 1.5 months to go for JEE Advanced, Garg said he wants to devote his time to IIT preparation. He did yoga, wrote poetry and short stories, and read novels. He also had an interest in watching and playing cricket but he has stopped all his habits for now and wants to continue them after attending his dream college.
During his preparation, he likes chemistry the least, because it “requires more cramming than logic application,” as in physics and chemistry, Saumitra said.
He suggested to his colleagues about the preparation for the entrance exam, saying, “There are many books on the market for preparation, instead of getting lost in the long list, you should choose an author and dive deep into it.” For his studies, he claims not to have followed a strict timetable and instead focuses on the clarity of the concept and solving problems with higher difficulty levels and thinking order each time.
Saumitra is the youngest of three siblings. While his older brother helps his father in the family business, his older sister is an assistant professor. Paying tribute to his siblings Saumitr said, “Even though I passed the entrance exam, I believe my siblings are more intelligent than I am. They are the reason I am where I am, they motivated and cared for me in every aspect of life.” His mother is a housewife and the father runs a business.
