The National Education Policy (NEP) of the government was adopted in 2020. However, it came into effect during the 2023-2024 academic year. In addition to routine learning, the government emphasized on imparting practical knowledge to educate children through this policy. A 5+3+3+4 structure was also introduced, meaning that three years of kindergarten will be part of the definition of formal education in the school system.
The draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF) explained the 5+3+3+4 structure in detail and also informed how the single equation simplifies the entire education system. So, what is the 5+3+3+4 structure and how will it shape the education system? Let’s understand:
Five of the 5+3+3+4 in this case represent the formative years and are split into two parts. It includes 3 years of kindergarten and 2 years of primary school, or the first Anganwadi. Now coming to the first 3 of the framework, it includes classes 1 and 2 together. The next 3 indicates the preparatory class from grades 3 to 5. Later, the students move on to high school, which actually means grades 6 to 8. Once they finish high school, students can continue with four years of secondary education (grades 9 to 12). ).
Notably, according to the new policy, students are allowed to choose the subject of their preference in the last four years of school. There will be 8 groups for the students of classes 9 to 12: humanities, mathematics-informatics, vocational education, physical education, art education, social sciences and interdisciplinary subjects. These four years of secondary education are divided into two phases. While science, social sciences and humanities are taught in the first phase, students will learn history, physics and language in the second phase.
Moreover, semester system will be introduced for students of 11th and 12th standard. Students must complete one course per semester. Students must complete 16 papers to complete their education in 12th grade.
