The National Medical Commission (NMC) has canceled admission to UG and PG medical seats in three private medical colleges in Telangana. This has led to dozens of students getting angry and officially intervening in the case. In all, 450 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats were canceled by the committee, along with some postgraduate medical seats.
The NMC has called “infrastructure shortcomings and teacher shortages” for canceling the seats. It said 150 MBBS seats each were canceled in three private medical colleges, including MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad and TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru. The committee added that about 70 postgraduate seats were also canceled in MNR Medical College and Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences.
It is recalled that teams from the NMC recently conducted a nationwide surprise inspection of colleges in March this year. The inspection was done to assess the faculty strength, infrastructure and patient intake in the teaching hospitals. However, the NMC only acted on the inspection reports after admission to the University of Groningen and PG training in medicine had ended.
It issued cancellation orders for the medical seats in the colleges on May 19 after the admission to medical courses through NEET counseling 2021-22 was completed. This has now failed the students who had been admitted to these colleges.
Following the decision, the management of the three private universities of applied sciences also appealed to the NMC to withdraw the decision due to student interests. Meanwhile, several parents, who claim to have taken out loans to admit their children to these colleges, are stunned by the move. Many emphasized the abrupt timing of the decision that came after the termination of NEET counselling. In addition, some colleges have also started classes for the freshmen.
NMC canceled RUG places in MNR College and PG seats in courses such as anatomy, biochemistry and ophthalmology. In Mahavir College, NMC canceled admission to all PG courses, including pediatrics, orthopedics and MD general medicine, Deccan Chronicle reported.
