The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently issued a notice regarding university admission to MBBS programs in China. The post has warned students applying for admission about China’s strict restrictions on student visas. Furthermore, it has asked the students to “exercise due diligence” when choosing an education in the country.
It should be remembered here that thousands of Indian students studying in China had previously launched a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #takeusbacktochina. They have also contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request government intervention.
Thousands of Indians studying medicine in China had returned to India for their winter break in 2020 and have been stranded ever since. They were unable to return to their colleges because Covid-19 restrictions were put in place. However, despite the decline in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, China has not lifted travel restrictions on students.
In its message, the NMC stated that it has come to the attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that some universities in the People’s Republic of China have started issuing MBBS admission notices for the current and upcoming academic years.
“In this context, any prospective student should be aware that the government of the People’s Republic of China has imposed strict travel restrictions in the wake of COVID-19 and suspended all visas since November 2020,” said NMC Secretary Dr. Sandhya Bhullar in the official statement. notice.
It added: “A large number of international students, including Indian students, have not been able to return to China to continue their studies because of these restrictions. So far, there has been no easing of restrictions. the Chinese authorities previously announced that courses will be delivered online.”
“However, the NMC does not recognize or approve medical courses taught through online mode only, under existing rules,” the statement read.
Ms Sandhya Bhullar further said that students are advised to consult the FMGE regulations before applying or planning to seek admission from institutions in China/foreign institutions. Students are advised to exercise due care in choosing where to pursue medical training, the message reads.
