According to reports, of the 1,641 vacant seats in the MBBS, 872 seats are in the All India Quota. This includes institutions like AIIMS, JIPMER and AMU. Apart from this, seats are also vacant in many medical colleges administered by the state of Tamil Nadu. There are many colleges whose annual fees are less than Rs 20,000. As per the information, 154 seats are vacant in Maharashtra, 118 in Karnataka, 121 in Rajasthan, 118 in Karnataka and 162 in Puducherry.
According to reports, these seats will remain vacant if the students do not apply for these seats or do not join the college where they are allotted seats.
In contrast, all state quota seats in government colleges were filled by the State Selection Commission in three rounds of online counseling. Reports suggest that Tamil Nadu will soon open portals for conducting stray rounds on Saturday to fill seats in government quota, management quota and NRI lapsed seats in self-financing colleges.
Parents and students say states should opt for hybrid counseling sessions to avoid blocking of seats in central and state counselling.
On the other hand, the private medical colleges have urged the Center to reduce the cut-off percentage or give back seats for on-campus admissions; The so-called universities, which account for two-fifths of the vacancies, offer scholarships. Reports added that Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute, for 205 of the 250 vacant seats, has announced a scholarship of Rs 2 lakh for candidates below 200 NEET marks and up to Rs 4 lakh for students above 300 marks .
