The government of Tamil Nadu has removed a “discriminatory clause” requiring medical students with disabilities to attach images of their “disfigurement”. The move comes within two days after disability rights advocate Dr. Satendra Singh filed a complaint with the state commission on the welfare of disabled people on Wednesday.
According to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) of the Tamil Nadu, previously for admission to postgraduate degrees and certificate programs in state medical institutions, as well as government seats in the state’s self-funding medical colleges, applicants with disabilities would be asked to attach attachments a photo showing their deformity.
The clause has now been removed by DME. The clause violates medical ethics, according to Singh, a professor at the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) at Delhi University. In his complaint, Singh had asked the court to “punish the respondents and ask them to immediately issue a corrigendum removing the clause”.
dr. R Muthuselvan, Secretary, Selection Committee of DME, said in a notice: “The serial number 4 in the special category form for the person with disabilities in the prospectus of the Postgraduate Degree/Diploma and MDS Courses in Government Medical/Dental Colleges will be removed the government quota in self-funding medical/dental colleges for the 2022-23 session.”
According to DME, candidates seeking admission under the special category can “submit their recent passport photograph (taken within three months) showing the face of the person with disabilities in the attached special category format only.”
The National Eligibility Completion Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) and the Master of Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) counseling dates have been released by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) at mcc.nic.in. The first round of applications for the NEET PG and MDS 2022 guidance will start on September 1, according to the official timetable. Through its 16 medical colleges, hospitals and the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University/Specialized Institutes, Government of Tamil Nadu provides postgraduate medical education.
