The Union’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, will publish the annual Indian ranking – NIRF 2022 – on July 15 at 11am. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rates Indian institutions on several parameters, including education, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation results, reach and inclusiveness, and perception. Notably, Indian institutes including IITs have blamed the foreign rankings frameworks including THE and QS Ranking for the high weight of perception matrices as one of the reasons for the lower ranking of Indian educational institutions internationally.
The number of colleges that have registered for the ranking this year is increasing. A total of 7,254 higher education institutions from all over India participated in NIRF 2022, up from 6,272 last year. The rankings are released in 11 categories and subject areas including General, College, University, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Law, etc.

Last year, despite an increase in the number of participants, the top slots remained occupied by leading institutions. In recent years, IIT Madras and IISc have been rated as the best institutes in India. The IIT Madras took first place in the general category for the third time in a row last year. It also tops the engineering category for the sixth time in a row.
In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad again topped the list and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi occupied the top position among medical institutes for the fourth consecutive year.
Last year, the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, held its first position in law for the fourth consecutive year. Jamia Hamdard tops the list in the pharmacy discipline for the third consecutive year. Miranda College held its first rank among colleges for the fifth consecutive year.
NIRF was introduced in 2015 with the aim of promoting nationalized ranking parameters for higher education institutions in the country. The first rankings were released in four categories, based largely on topics. The list of categories has been further expanded to eight in the year 2019 and the NIRF has also introduced a general list of institutes.
