Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday (August 12, 2024) announced the much-awaited 9th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024. The NIRF Rankings, published annually, evaluate and rank higher education institutions in India based on various criteria.
IIT Madras was declared the best higher education institution in the country, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru came second and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay secured third position, followed by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in an overall category ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
As usual, IITs have maintained their strong position in the engineering category of the NIRF Rankings 2024, occupying most of the top 10 positions.
Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) was declared the best university in the country, followed by JNU Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College was declared the best college in the country, followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College.
The Chennai-based institute retained the top spot in the 'general and technical' categories.
The NIRF introduced three new categories this year: Open Universities, Skill Universities and State-funded universities. The NIRF also plans to introduce sustainability as a new category in 2025.
After announcing the NIRF Ranking 2024, the Union Education Minister said, “I want to appeal to every Indian higher educational institution through this programme to be ranked. This will help the students and their parents to understand the institution better. This will also promote quality education.”
“The participation of educational institutions of the country in NIRF is gradually increasing… I want to appeal through today's programme that gradually all the higher educational institutions of India participate in this. This will enable the students and parents of the country to know the type of institution their children are studying in and the children themselves can also know the type of institution they are studying in. This competition will enhance the quality of education in the country… A lot of reform has been brought in the existing accreditation process. It has been made very transparent…” the Education Minister added.
