Upon examining their documents, Canadian authorities discovered that the ‘admission letters’ to educational institutions were fake and the Canadian Border Security Agency sent them letters of deportation
Jalandhar police said on Thursday they have found the office of the travel agent who allegedly issued false documents to more than 700 Indian students facing deportation from Canada.
Police said the office is located near the city bus station, but it has been closed for six months.
They said they are verifying other details but have not yet received any complaint in this matter.
Some media reports have said that more than 700 Indian students are being expelled from Canada for submitting false documents issued by a Jalandhar-based travel agency.
The students had gone to Canada on a study visa in 2018-19, but the fraud came to light after they recently applied for permanent residency (PR) in the North American country.
Upon examining their documents, Canadian authorities discovered that the ‘admission letters’ to educational institutions were bogus and the Canadian Border Security Agency sent them letters of deportation.
According to the reports, the travel agent had charged more than Rs 16 lakh per student for his services.
“We have not yet received any complaints about this. But still we are verifying it,” Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ) Vatsala Gupta told reporters.
She said the travel agency’s office has remained closed for the past six months. “We are still verifying and when we receive a complaint we will take action,” she added. In particular, many students from Punjab aspire to go to Canada for higher education and settle there.
