As the country celebrates Teacher’s Day, the state of educators in India is still disappointing. The country that calls its teacher gurus has recently seen an increase in cases of violence against teachers. Talking about teaching as a profession, a large number of teachers and professors across India are talking to news18.com, and most of them are asking for more support and recognition.
Ramya Venkataraman, Founder and CEO, Center for Teacher Accreditation (CENTA), highlighted the issues teachers face across the country: “Insufficient career growth, recognition and support options are some of the key issues in the profession many of us face. addressing.”
Speaking about a survey they conducted, CENTA chief said: “In a large survey of teachers, we found that next to merit-based career growth, this is the number two thing teachers want. More explicit recognition of their work, leading to greater respect for the subject as a whole.”
Lalitha, a teacher at a government school in Delhi and a member of the Government School Teacher Association (GSTA), said: “The profession once so revered is now being left disorganized.” She says: “Teaching is a tough profession. We are responsible for shaping the personalities of tomorrow, and all the fertility is doing the job diligently and proudly, yet many teachers are treated badly.”

Another Hyderabad government teacher, V Manjula, said: “There is a need for a better student-teacher relationship, especially in government schools. The lack of a good relationship between students and teachers creates stress for both students and teachers, so it needs to be improved.”
Talking about the need for support for the teachers, Ramya added that teaching is both a profession with many human connections, but also a profession that can be lonely. You do not regularly work with other adults; you are often under pressure to “have the right answer” for everything.
Anil Mammen, Chief – Learning Design & Social Impact, Tata Studi, “Teaching is not just about handling content. It is also about being able to connect with children, building trust and creating a sense of belonging for each student. And teachers need a supportive environment to do this.”
Professor Smriti Arora, UPES, stated that it is necessary to train the teachers and said: “No one is perfect and so are teachers. There are areas for improvement specific to each teacher and ways to upgrade themselves to align with the goals of the nation. Training teachers is therefore crucial.”
