The University Grants Commission (UGC) has clarified the eligibility criteria for promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). The clarification comes after the UGC received several questions from stakeholders regarding the eligibility requirements for supervising PhD students.
“Eligible permanent faculty members may receive Ph.D. scholars also during their probationary period,” the committee said in a statement. UGC discussed the issue at its 565th meeting held on January 20. The committee has also requested all universities to follow the CAS promotion provision and also to comply with its decision.
Earlier in January, UGC had released a clarification on the eligibility criteria for CAS promotions of university teachers from Academic Level 12 to Academic Level 13A and Level 13A to Academic Level 14. The committee made the clarifications regarding the terms ” Evidence of at least one PhD candidate” and “Evidence of successfully supervised PhD candidate.” At a meeting in November last year, the committee also resolved questions about the suitability of university lecturers being promoted.
What is CAS?
Career advancement scheme, as the name suggests, means career advancement procedure adopted by the universities as per the UGC regulations. This regulation applies to the promotion of lecturers at the university. It is an essential part of a structure in which an individual faculty member can advance to a higher position and/or pay if there is no clear vacancy.
To apply for CAS, a candidate must hold a PhD in the relevant subject/related/relevant discipline. Must have completed a minimum of ten research publications in the UGC-listed journals, three of which should have been published during the assessment period. They must also have proof of successfully supervising PhD students.
Meanwhile, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched a self-assessment test and entrance exam assistance platform called SATHEE earlier this week. This self-paced assessment platform was created by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Ministry of Education (MoE).
The SATHEE platform is developed for students to prepare for all kinds of competitive exams such as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and others taking place in the country.
