New Delhi: In the midst of a shortage of medical faculties in medical colleges, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is planning to fill the vacancy with retired doctors from the army and the railways.
This step of the Indian Apex Medical Education Regulator comes in the background of economic survey that emphasizes faculty deficits, which influence the quality of medical training.
The plan is intended to fulfill at least 700 of such positions in the government institutions. According to the plan, the appointment of this educational faculty is planned for post -university courses to give specialized curriculum by the retired doctors of the armed forces, railways and the employee insurance corporation (ESIC).

As part of the plan, the NMC has a draft teachers eligible qualifications (TEQ) in the regulations of the medical institutions, 2024, for consideration by stakeholders.
“TEQ will benefit at least 600-700 seats to government institutions. This will improve patient care and the deserving faculty of Werven. However, the TEQ proposal is at the Ministry of Health for further deliberations and is delayed,” said an official who also adds the delay in the country.
“Specialist medical officer of the armed forces with at least 8 years of educational experience after obtaining the required recognized post -doctoral qualification in the subject, of which three years as an university teacher in an educational hospital of the armed forces, with two research publications under the relevant provisions, can be regarded as eligible for appointment in the subject,” said the subject in question.

This indicates a considerable shortage of cardiology, neurology, oncology and surgery specialists.
Until July last year, NMC has documented around 1.38 million doctors with an MBBS degree, which translates into one MBBS tax holder per 1,263 people.
Delay in process
“Until the TEQ has not been accepted by the government, the recruitment of the Faculty cannot happen and the process delay,” said a second officer.
The officer said that the recruitment of faculty members is a mammoth process, because the government must give indications such as Professor, Assistant Professor and Assistantial Lecturer. “Without the names, this faculty cannot work in the medical colleges.”
