The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to re-employ retired teachers in state schools, including Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV).
According to an order from the chief secretary of primary education, Deepak Kumar, the government plans to recruit dedicated retired teachers who are willing to be re-enlisted to jointly supervise schools.
“As mentors, they will have to provide peer learning, stimulate intrinsic motivation and make the classroom student-centered. This will lead to an improvement in the learning level of students,” said Secretary, Elementary Education, Vijay Kumar Anand.
The move will have multiple benefits, including its use in schools with teacher shortages, including trained teachers. It will also promote the concept of mentoring in schools with very little expenditure, the official claimed.
According to the notice, teachers under the age of 70 will be eligible for mentorship and their tenure will be one year. Each selected teacher undergoes a performance appraisal after one year before the contract is renewed.
In the selection, preference will be given to teachers who have been awarded at the state or national level. Also, they must have at least five years of experience, either as assistant teachers or head teachers (principals).
Selected teachers will get Rs 2,500 as mobility allowance per month. No additional fee will be given.
Each selected teacher must supervise at least 30 schools online through the Prerna app and encourage parents and students to use the Diksha and Mee Lees app.
These teachers will also observe school activities such as montage, demonstrate sports and exemplary teaching in schools.
