Some 25 schoolchildren experienced tense moments on a railway track under a bridge on Friday when the van carrying them got stuck in the flooded RUB before the wards were taken to safety by locals, including some farmers. What was a daily route for the van driver turned out to be a harrowing experience for the young passengers, as the man was unable to gauge the strength of the water, which stagnated there after heavy rains that ravaged many parts of the state.
Students from several villages got into the vehicle and the driver left for the school in Mahabubnagar, an official said. He entered the RUB which was under water, possibly with the hope of making it. However, due to the rain of the past few days, the water level was high. The van routinely runs through the RUB, but the driver doesn’t seem to estimate the amount of water today, he said.
The vehicle’s engine gave out under the force of the water. However, farmers and other local residents rushed to the site and took the children to safety, he said. The van was also pulled with a tractor, he added. Several parts of Telangana have had rain in recent days as the southwest monsoon has been active over the state.
