The Tamil Nadu Tribal Department, in conjunction with the district administrations, will provide special sports training programs for tribal students.
As part of this project, the Kallakurichi district administration has started a ten-day special sports training program for children from the Ekalavya Tribal Welfare School in the hills of Kalryan.
The ten-day program aims to instill confidence in children from tribal hamlets who are generally reluctant to participate in sports and games.
According to the Kallakurichi district administration, about 150 children will receive free training in volleyball, kabbadi, long jump, high jump, short put, relay and rope gymnastics. The children will also be trained in traditional tribal sports such as mallakhamb.
District collector of Kallakurichi, PN Sridhar, said during a conversation with IANS: “The students of Ekalavya tribe school receive this sports training as a step to strengthen and improve their skills. These students from the Kalryan Hill tribe school will be equipped with skills in various games so that they can participate in state, national and international tournaments.”
The coaches will be sheltered on the school grounds as it would be difficult for them to reach the hills of Kalryan from Kallakurichi. The students, who are undergoing sports training, will also be provided with a hostel in the school itself, as it is risky to leave for homes in the remote areas after the night because of the wildlife in the area.
The state tribes department also faces these problems, as almost all tribal schools are located in forest areas or adjacent to forest areas. The Tribal Department will conduct sports training programs in all tribal schools of Tamil Nadu after the successful completion of the sports training program being conducted at Ekalavya Tribal School, in the Kalryan Hills in Kallakurichi.
Sources in the state tribal department told IANS that the budget for the sports development program among tribal students will be released from the funds allocated for health and nutrition for tribal students.
