In an effort to curb sexual harassment, Maharashtra’s minister Varsha Gaikwad ordered all schools to install CCTV cameras on Friday. In the Legislative Council, the state education minister said there are some 65,000 schools in the state, made up of state-run, state-funded, private schools and schools affiliated with various education boards.
“All these schools must deploy CCTV cameras to control sexual harassment. We will make it mandatory for schools to support the CCTV cameras with a hard drive so that daily images can be recorded and made available if needed for research, she said.

Schools will be required to set up a ‘Sakhi Savitri’ committee made up of principal, female teacher, doctor, anganwadi staff member, male and female students to maintain the school decor and also conduct research if necessary. Member names should be prominently displayed in schools, she added. Gaikwad said the school education commissioner will oversee the functioning of these committees.
