As in other parts of the country, now in Kashmir, the 10th and 12th grade exams are held in March. In this regard, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued an order for a unified academic calendar. However, these exams were previously held in Kashmir in October and November.
The Ministry of Education issued an order on Wednesday. It states that a committee was formed in April and, on the advice of the committee, it has been decided that board examinations will also be held in Kashmir in March. However, the government has not issued an order for the students up to and including class 9. There are many questions about this. On the one hand, academic experts are calling it a wrong decision, while on the other, the Private School Association says that service providers have not been taken on board.
News 18 spoke to some students and got their views on the new order.
The 10th grade students seemed pleased with the decision. They say they now have enough time to prepare for the exams and those who used to sit at home after the exams in the winter will now prepare for the exams during that time.
“It’s a very good decision and now we will prepare well for the exams, although in the winter we were at home waiting for the results and now it won’t happen,” said Muzamil, a class 10 student. in March and prepare well for the winter,” he added.
There, the 12th grade students expressed their concern and said that the goal for them is to prepare for NEET and other entrance exams after the 12th, but now they will have less time to prepare for the entrance exams.
On the other hand, the President of the Private School Association, GN War, found this decision incomplete. He said the government was not taking stakeholders on board. He said that “the government has given the decision, but those who have to implement the decision have not been placed in the committee. As there will be a shortage of electricity and other utilities, the government should have taken the stakeholders on board so that a good decision could have been made.” In the March session there will be a lot of problems in Kashmir because of the weather.”
Meanwhile, the academic experts also called this decision wrong for the future of the students. They say that if the students show up for the exam in March, they will be at home all year round, because it is very cold in Kashmir and everyone stays at home for three months. By the way, if the kids show up for the exam in March and then come home in June waiting for the results, when will they go to college?’ They added that the government should reconsider this decision so that the education of the students in Kashmir is not adversely affected.
When News18 spoke to Alok Kumar, the government’s chief secretary of the School Education Department, he said this decision was made for the bright future of the children. He said that during the winter, teachers would educate children through digital platforms as everyone has been digitally educated during the Covid period. There is uniformity and exams are taken simultaneously; students will also be given time and evaluation will increase. He went on to say that the students would also be given time for more than two hundred days of classroom study. When asked about the opinion of the people, he replied: “Those who are not happy with the decisions of the government will resist and it is their job to do so, and if they think of a good future for their children, they will not resist.”
