Floods in Chennai:
Days after Cyclone Michuang wreaked havoc in Chennai and neighboring districts in Tamil Nadu, residents in some areas continue to suffer stagnant water and power cuts despite intensified relief and rehabilitation efforts by social agencies. The cyclone and subsequent severe flooding severely affected Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengelpet and Tiruvallur in northern Tamil Nadu.
Colombo Security Conclave:
On December 7, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval underlined the importance of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) in ensuring regional security and stability. His comments were made during the sixth NSA-level meeting of the CSC in Mauritius. The CSC consists of members such as the Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and India, with the Seychelles and Bangladesh participating as observers. The high-level meeting resulted in an agreed activity roadmap for 2024. Discussions focused on regional security scenarios and strategies to improve security cooperation among member states, reports said.
Carbon Emissions in India:
According to international research, CO2 emissions in India are expected to increase by 8.2% in 2023, while in China they are expected to increase by 4%. The research team, which involved the University of Exeter in the UK and 90 other institutions worldwide, indicates that global emissions from coal, oil and gas are expected to increase by 1.1%, 1.5% and 0.5% respectively will increase. In contrast, the European Union (EU) and the United States are expected to experience a 7.4% and 3% reduction in their emissions, respectively.
NIA raids in JK:
On December 5, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at several locations in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with a terror plot orchestrated by offshoots of banned Pakistan-backed terrorist organisations, the investigation agency said. The searches led to the seizure of numerous digital devices containing significant incriminating data and documents. The NIA teams conducted raids at eight locations in seven districts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, including Shopian, Pulwama, Poonch, Baramulla, Kupwara, Ganderbal and Srinagar.
COP28:
India and China refused to sign a pledge at the COP28 climate summit on December 2 to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030, even though New Delhi had already committed to that as part of its G20 presidency. In a widely supported initiative, 118 countries pledged at the UN climate talks in Dubai to triple the amount of renewable energy produced globally by 2030.
