SC Denies Tamil Nadu’s Plea For Release Of 24,000 Cusecs Cauvery Water
The Supreme Court declined to issue any order on the request of the Tamil Nadu government to release 24,000 cusec Cauvery water per day through Karnataka for crop cultivation. The case was heard by a three-judge court headed by Judge B. R. Gavai, who requested a report from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on the amount of water released by Karnataka. A meeting of the authority is scheduled for Monday, August 28.
I&B Ministry warns against direct and indirect betting advertisements in the media
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) issued a dire warning on August 25 to stop all online betting promotions on any media platform. The government suspects that black money is involved in these advertisements, especially during major sporting events. Previously, in October 2022, guidelines were issued against such advertising on private TV, digital news and OTT platforms. The government also warned against such promotions in June of the previous year. Since gambling is largely banned in the country, advertisements and surrogate promotions for gambling platforms are also considered illegal. Legal action will be taken for non-compliance.
Delhi HC’s advice to parents of lesbian women
The Delhi High Court has ordered the parents and maternal uncle of a 22-year-old lesbian woman to undergo counseling to accept her as she pleases. The court, headed by Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna, acted on a habeas corpus plea from the woman’s girlfriend, who alleged her disappearance. After consultation, the court advised the police to take her to a shelter for reflection on her future and arranged for her to be accommodated there. The woman indicated that she was not willing to go with her parents or relatives and chose to be with the petitioner or to stay in the shelter.
Russian president skips G20 summit during military operation in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend next month’s G20 summit in New Delhi. His absence has been attributed to his focus on the ongoing military operation in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Putin has refrained from participating in multilateral summits, with the exception of events related to Russian-backed organizations or in which Russia has a key role to play, such as the SCO, CSTO and CICA. He also missed the G20 summit in Indonesia and the BRICS summit in South Africa. However, Putin plans to visit China in October for the “One Belt, One Road” forum.
Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin reportedly dies in a private jet crash
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, has reportedly died in a private jet crash in the northern region of Moscow. A Telegram channel associated with Wagner claimed that the plane was shot down by the Russian army in the Tver region. However, no official confirmation has been issued on this. Russian state media reported that the plane caught fire and crashed within half an hour of takeoff.
